Maurice Sendak’s lovely appearance on The Colbert Report (see last week’s post) brought back memories of watching and re-watching the animated version of Sendak’s In the Night Kitchen. Directed by Gene Deitch in 1987, this brief, animated adaptation sets Sendak’s story of Mickey’s nighttime journey to delightfully strange (yet hypnotically soothing) narration and music. It has proved a very effective baby-sitting tool on many occasions.
